CHILD'S POSE (Balasana)

   

Contra-indications: Diarrhoea, knee injury.

How to perform: Kneeling down, sit on the heels with your big toes touching one another. The knees may separate about a hip width apart. Exhale and simply fold forward with the front body resting on the thighs and the forehead resting on the floor. Place the arms by your sides relaxing the shoulders down, away from the ears. Rest in this pose anywhere from 6 breaths to a few minutes. Inhale and come up slowly to the starting position.

Do not allow the skin on the forehead to be stretched towards the hairline - be sure that the skin on the forehead is moving towards the nose, as this is most restful for the brain.

Do surrender to the pull of gravity and, within this space of absolute rest, allow healing and rejuvenation to come into every cell of the body.

What if... I have difficulty relaxing into the pose due to some discomfort? Use blankets or rolled up towels under the ankles, behind the knees, under the hips, and under the chest and head to ensure comfort.
